DAY 02: Today we wake up very early to observe the Cock of the Rock (rupicola peruviana), Peru’s national bird. The male birds are vibrant reddish orange, at about 5:00 a.m. as many as several dozens come together for an exhibition of a ritual mating dance in place called Lek. The males display their crest, showing off and posturing for the females. The females, fewer in number, watch to select the most suitable males. After breakfast, we continue in our transport down the narrow road between waterfalls and canyons toward Pilcopata town where we will make all the final settings for a 3 hours rafting trip (class II and III) down the Kosñipata River where we will have the opportunity for dip and of course enjoy the spectacular view. It is possible to observe different species of birds such as herons, vultures, cormorants, etc. A short stop at Atalaya Port for lunch and then continue down to Alto Madre de Dios River to our private Reserve of Erika Lodge where we will spend the next two nights.
