ERIKA LODGE |
Erika Lodge (600 m.s.n.m. - 1.150 feet)
Erika Lodge is located near the Alto Madre de Dios River and is flanked by the Piñi Piñi river and a set of mountains located in the transition zone between high and low jungle, encompassing different habitats. This altitude range explains the high diversity of wildlife found around this area. Our lodge has 90 hectares of forest declared as Private Reserve in 1992.
Erika Lodge was opened the first time in 1970 and becoming the first tourist shelter area in Peru. In the past it was also the searchers spot of Paititi (The City of Lost Gold of the Incas), visitors to the Petroglyphs of Pusharo and the Pyramids of Paratoari.
The Private Reserve Erika is now owned by Manu Adventures, which hosts smaller groups of 40 people, with double rooms.
We have electric generator to provide electricity during the night to our guests. The facilities are rustic with comfortable accommodations in rooms equipped with beds, blankets and mosquito nets, also has a cozy screened dining room, kitchen, shared bathrooms and hammocks to relax and observe nature.
This beautiful place is used by Ornithologists, but also by all our different groups which spend a night going into Reserved Zone in our programs and for the Cultural Zone per two or more nights.
We have an interesting trail system about 15km. Unmarked road that connects the forest with our Erika Lodge. Visitors can use these trails as long as they can, accompanied by a specialist guide.
The forest and river on the way to Erika Lodge is home to many plants and animals, some of these species are endangered. The forest is a source of seeds and trees for reforestation projects.
Here you can see a wide variety of birds and animals including macaws, parrots, toucans, peccaries, and 5 different species of monkeys including the endangered Wooly Monkey. Nearly lakes are home of the white cayman (caiman crocodylus).
Across from our lodge, crossing the Alto Madre de Dios river, there is a small "Collpa", where it is possible to observe quietly and with help of a telescope, a variety of parrots on the wall of clay, which arrive daily to feed minerals and salt supplements, necessary for their diet of seeds and fruits. The most common species are the blue head parrot, parakeet dark head, the eye-white parakeet and others.
Health: Manu National Park is not an endemic area for malaria or yellow fever, but it is recommended to use insect repellent. The river is not recommended for human consumption. Purified water will be provided at our Lodges. We have daily radio communication available with our Cusco´s main office. |
